Property Description:
Three bay three storey, originally full height single storey reading room, faced with dressed Dungiven sandstone.
Prior to intervention the stone façade at Castle Street had been over painted and all low level windows were fitted with crude external metal shutters. Prior to refurbishment the property was vacant, in an extremely poor state of repair with serious water ingress problems at parapet level.  

History:
Constructed in 1825 the property, in conjunction with 14 Shipquay Street, was designed for use as a public library and reading rooms, being paid for by private subscription. The property housed the first telephone exchange and call box in the City, dating to circa 1889, with the call box being located within the newsroom area.

Repair of external fabric, reinstatement of architectural detail and re-use of historic floorspace to comprise;

  • re-roofing and lead work repair
